Celebrating 100 years of Zumsteins - 25 November
Thursday 16 August, 2012
The 100 Year celebration of Zumsteins will be held on Sunday 25 November 2012 at Zumsteins Picnic Ground in the Grampians National Park.
A small group has come together from the community, the Horsham Historical Society and Parks Victoria to plan for this special day.
They would like to invite anybody who has enjoyed or has a strong association to the area, to come and celebrate this much-loved place created one hundred years ago by Walter Zumstein.
The celebrations begin at 10.30am with a number of speakers bringing to life the many memories of the area, and of Walter Zumstein and his family.
The celebration is an informal family day with a light lunch provided by the local Laharum community.
“We hope families make a day of it and bring their blankets and chairs to listen to the many stories,” said Rod Jenkinson, president of the Horsham Historical Society.
“The Horsham Historical Society is producing a book on Zumsteins that will be available on the day. If anyone with Zumsteins memories or photos that can be shared in a book please contact me."
While restoration works at Zumsteins resulting from the 2011 storms and flooding will not be complete by November, visitors will see plenty of evidence of the site’s recovery both in the picnic area and in the surrounding environment.
Ranger in Charge Dave Roberts said: “There will be plenty of change and improvements for people to see and our team is working hard to complete as much of the work as possible before the event.”
“We’ll make sure that visitors celebrating this historic occasion will be able to enjoy one of the most popular picnic spots in the Grampians."
Parks Victoria is funding the event with support from Horsham Rural City Council and Northern Grampians Shire.
