Closing autumn firewood collection – Barmah Island

Monday 7 May, 2018

The domestic firewood collection area at Barmah Island will close on Monday 14 May with all allocated firewood having been collected.

Domestic firewood on public land is a limited resource that is managed to ensure forest health isn’t impacted. It is also vital that areas of fallen timber remain on the ground across the park to preserve faunal habitats.

Alternative sources of firewood include additional public firewood collection areas across Victoria and commercial suppliers.

If purchasing firewood, it is important to see the supplier’s commercial licence as it is an offence to sell domestic firewood collected during the firewood season.

Future firewood collection from Barmah Island will be subject to access and supply.

Quotes attributable to Parks Victoria District Manager, Daniel McLaughlin

“The available supply of firewood has been collected from the Barmah Island site before the end of the autumn collection season, so the site will close early.”

“Our staff will continue to patrol the collection area once it is closed. We encourage people to do the right thing and use alternative sources of firewood. On the spot fines and heavy penalties apply to people collecting from closed areas.”
