Friends of the Organ Pipes celebrate 40 years
Tuesday 13 November, 2012
The longest running Friends Group of any park in Victoria celebrated its 40th anniversary with a community party last Sunday.
The Friends of the Organ Pipes National Park have been helping return it to a natural environment since its declaration in March 1972.
Minister for Environment and Climate Change Ryan Smith joined the celebrations at the park and presented a Lifetime Achievement Award to the group’s founding member Mr Don Marsh.
He also presented the group with a Certificate of Appreciation on behalf of Parks Victoria as an acknowledgement of the enormous contribution it has made to the park over four decades.
“They’ve helped make it a park again; removed rubbish, got rid of weeds, and revegetated it with indigenous trees and shrubs that they propagated themselves with local seed. As a result the park is now home to many native species such as kangaroos, wallabies and platypuses.”
The Friends of Organ Pipes are also involved in projects to re-establish and monitor other native animals in the park, such as Sugar Gliders, native bats and frogs.
