New loos for Blanket Bay, Aire River and Johanna Beach Campgrounds

Wednesday 24 October, 2012

Parks Victoria has started replacing the toilets at Blanket Bay, Aire River and Johanna Beach campgrounds. Works commenced this week and it is expected that the new toilets will be ready for the Christmas holidays.

The new loos will be vaulted toilets which are more environmentally friendly. A vault toilet is a waterless pit toilet which uses environmentally friendly chemicals to compost the waste. They are often used in remote areas not serviced by a sewer system, and are pumped out regularly.

The toilet upgrades are necessary as current facilities do not meet EPA requirements and the replacement of the toilets was identified in the Great Otway National Park management plan.

New toilets will also be built at the Cape Otway Lightstation carpark and at Parker Hill Campground to meet an increasing demand for facilities at these sites. The facilities are being delivered by Parks Victoria through Regional Development Victoria on behalf of the Victorian Government.

Jack Dinkgreve, Ranger in Charge at Apollo Bay says the toilet upgrades continue the program of park improvement: “the Great Otway National Park is a very popular park, and the campgrounds are increasingly busy.

“We have been making some terrific improvements at these campgrounds and the toilets will be a very welcome addition."
