Old roads, new conditions after road works completed

Tuesday 9 July, 2013

Drivers are reminded to be cautious in Bendigo, Heathcote and Castlemaine parks and reserves after hundreds of kilometres of roads were repaired and resurfaced as part of flood recovery works.

Grading and resurfacing works have greatly improved the look and amenity of the roads, however low rainfall and lack of traffic has left some areas unsettled and drivers are asked to slow down.

Daniella Murrell, Ranger in Charge for North Central District called for drivers to be aware of the changed conditions of local roads and exercise caution when travelling in these areas.

“Our local crews have done an excellent job grading and resurfacing, but we ask drivers to help the road settle and drive slowly, and with care,” Ms Murrell said. “Driving slower will assist the roads recover and local wildlife, particularly kangaroos will be especially thankful.”

Ms Murrell said weather conditions would affect how surface materials on repaired roads would settle, or ‘bed down’.

“With low rainfall, we are experiencing a lack of soil moisture in the road surface. This moisture helps roads surfaces settle, particularly where we have added gravel surfacing. When we have some rain and traffic over the roads, the surface will compact and solidify. Until then, there will be some loose road surfaces, so take it easy on the throttle.”

Acting Senior Sergeant Damian Keegan, Bendigo Highway Patrol expected many visitors would be keen to take to the flood recovered areas, but called for caution for the sake of local wildlife, and for fewer stone chips on their cars.

“The road you know like the back of your hand may have had a change in conditions since you last drove on it, in some instances very few cars may have driven on it. Drivers can retain better steering control of a vehicle at low speeds. Be cautious, slow down and get home safely.”
