Removal of the Arthurs Seat Tower
Monday 10 September, 2012
Parks Victoria will commence the removal of the Arthurs Seat Tower this week.
Chief Ranger Libby Jude said salvage work would commence on Monday to reclaim items of interest for future interpretive displays.
“We have an inventory of items that will be salvaged including all plaques, the cast iron front doors, directional brass plates and sections of lattice from the window structures.”
“We have had good feedback from the community with many ideas on how we can retain some of the history of the tower within Arthurs Seat precinct.”
Ms Jude said much of the tower would be removed by the end of the week.
Background
In 2011 Parks Victoria commissioned a condition assessment of the tower, which determined that the structure had deteriorated beyond repair and recommended that it be demolished due to the risk to public safety.
Repair or restoration of the tower were not feasible options due to the advanced ‘concrete cancer’ in the structure.
