Temporary closure of Gabo Island Lighthouse Reserve

Temporary closure of Gabo Island Lighthouse Reserve

Parks Victoria will be undertaking temporary closure of the Gabo Lighthouse Reserve from Monday 20 March until Friday 21 April 2017, and again from Friday 5 May to Thursday 7 June 2017.

This temporary closure is required to safely undertake essential large-scale upgrade works to buildings within the Gabo Island lightstation and jetty area.

Parks Victoria District Manager Will McCutcheon said we have taken the opportunity during the quieter weather of the autumn period to undertake construction works that will provide our day visitors and overnight guests with safer facilities. Ageing roofs will be replaced to ensure preservation of National Heritage listed buildings that are exposed to the island’s harsh environmental conditions.  

“Due to the construction works and the numerous vessel movements required to carry in the building materials and remove waste, commercial charter boats and general boat-based visitors will not be able to dock on the jetty, nor land on the beach or other locations surrounding the island during the closure period,” added Mr McCutcheon.

The closure applies to those using a private boat, travelling with a commercial boat operator or taking flights with Merimbula Air Services, the licensed tour operator that utilises the island’s airstrip. Boat operators will be welcome to view the island from the water but people will not be allowed to go ashore.

Parks Victoria will not take accommodation bookings for the Gabo Lightstation cottages during these times and advises prospective visitors to check the Parks Victoria website www.parks.vic.gov.au for the latest information.

Gabo Island Lighthouse Reserve will be open for some pre-existing guest bookings from 22 April to 4 May 2017, with private day trippers and licenced tour operators also able to access the island during this period.

Gabo Island Lighthouse Reserve will be closed again from Friday 5 May to Wednesday 7 June 2017, reopening to the public and visitors on Thursday 8 June 2017. This second closure period is allocated to finalise any of the works that were not completed during the initial closure period.
