Ferntree Gully Picnic Area, which incorporates the 1000 Steps and Kokoda Track Memorial Walk, occupies 600 hectares of the south western area of the Dandenong Ranges National Park. The 1000 Steps and Kokoda Track Memorial Walk offer visitors the opportunity to experience the unique landscape of the Dandenong Ranges National Park while commemorating key events from the battles of the World War 2 Kokoda Campaign. In recent times, the 1000 Steps have become a popular place for fitness groups and people seeking an alternative to the indoor gym environment.

In response to increasing visitation, parking congestion and conflicts between some park activities, Parks Victoria is developing a draft precinct plan for the Ferntree Gully and One Tree Hill Picnic Area. The plan seeks to resolve a range of issues from the rationalisation and replacement of visitor facilities to the future visitor and recreational opportunities identified for the park.

Parks Victoria is now inviting community feedback on the draft concept. We would like to hear what you think about the plan, what you would like to see included and how we can improve the visitor experience of the Ferntree Gully and One Tree Hill Picnic Areas.
