Frankston Reservoir Draft Master Plan
Public feedback on the Draft Master Plan for the Frankston Reservoir has now closed. The closing date for submissions was Friday 7 October 2011. Thank you to all who responded.
Frankston Reservoir is a scenic reserve of 90.51 hectares surrounded by residential development. It incorporates a 10 hectare water body which from 1920 to 2004 was managed and operated as an open storage reservoir supplying drinking water to the southern metropolitan area of Melbourne. In 2008 the land was declared a conservation reserve in recognition of its important natural values, in particular the indigenous flora and fauna. The site is also significant for its Aboriginal and European cultural heritage.
No longer a potable water storage facility, the reservoir is currently only being fed by water runoff from within the reserve itself. Diverting and filtering local storm water from the surrounding area to maintain the quality and quantity of water in the reservoir is a priority in managing the reserve into the future.
As a reflection of its conservation status and close proximity of other recreation opportunities, Frankston Reservoir will provide a basic level of service to visitors. This conservation reserve will be a place for nature appreciation; for walking, connecting with nature and to provide breathing space within the urban environment.
