Cycle along the wide paths. The main trail follows the river and forms a circuit of 4.3 km. It links to the Maribyrnong River Trail, making it possible to walk or cycle from Keilor along the river as far as Footscray.
Brimbank Loop Walk
3.5km – 1.5hours
This wonderful loop walk allows you to experience much of Brimbank Park’s landscapes. The shared path follows the Maribyrnong River as it winds around the natural basin of Brimbank Park, then leads you up the escarpment away from the river, to panoramic views of the area. Along the way magnificent old River Red Gums can be seen, with many hollows being homes to birds and other wildlife.
The geological history of the land is on display on the river banks, where layers of basalt and sandstone were laid around 400 million years ago. An ideal location to begin this loop walk is from Carpark A, where you can make your way down the hill to the trail alongside the river. The café at the Visitor Centre can provide refreshment upon your return. Dogs are welcome at Brimbank Park, but must be on a lead at all times.
There are a number of walks that begin behind the café and many of these are well suited for wheelchairs and strollers. Most of the walks are sealed and are on reasonably level ground with slopes no greater than 1:14. One of the main paths takes you past the old Dodds Homestead and then alongside the old river gums on the Maribyrnong River.
Walkers have the option of crossing the river or continuing on the Maribyrnong River Trail which takes you to Picnic Area B. This trail is several metres wide and is a shared pathway with cyclists. The walk can be done as a loop walk by turning off at Picnic Area B and taking the path up to the carpark. The trail then leads up a small slope from the carpark, with the track surface changing from sealed to compacted gravel. This trail takes you back through parts of the Brimbank Park Playscape and back to the café entrance. This walk takes approximately 40 minutes depending on your walking or wheelchair speed.
