Tidal River unit accommodation replacement
Artists impression of new accommodation
Visitors to Wilsons Promontory National Park will see works are underway to replace the old ‘Lorikeet Flats’ accommodation. The previous flats were demolished following the 2011 floods.
The $1.8 million project will see new family-friendly units including an all-ability accessible unit, to be opened in 2017.
The first step in the re-build was to clear scrubby re-growth and some trees to create space for the new accommodation. This was followed by earthworks to improve the areas flood protection, including significant landscaping, ground level raising and wetland improvements designed to protect the re-built accommodation.
The location of some of the replacement accommodation units has also been influenced by the need to protect the recent discovery of stone artefacts beneath the surface as part of Parks Victoria’s cultural heritage management obligations.
Parks Victoria is working closely with the Friends of the Prom to re-vegetate across the park to off-set the removals at this site.
The new accommodation construction is scheduled to start after the wet winter months.
