Each summer Parks Victoria, the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources and Falls Creek Resort Management operate a program to eradicate Hawkweeds from Falls Creek and the Alpine National Park.

Hawkweeds are highly invasive weeds which out-compete other vegetation. Hawkweeds can cause major environmental damage in alpine areas, and are considered a significant threat to the Victorian Alps and agricultural production.

Volunteers play a major role in the eradication of hawkweeds by helping find plants so that they can be treated. Last year they contributed over 1,200 hours to the program.

Volunteers contribute to the eradication effort by conducting line surveys in the Alpine National Park. Volunteers are required for one week over December/January each year.

The dates for the 2016/2017 season are:

  • Session 1: Monday 12 – Friday 16 December 2016
  • Session 2: Monday 19 – Friday 23 December 2016
  • Session 3: Tuesday 27 – Friday 30 December 2016
  • Session 4: Tuesday 3 – Friday 6 January 2017
  • Session 5: Monday 9 – Friday 13 January 2017
  • Session 6: Monday 16 – Friday 20 January 2017

No experience is necessary and all training is provided. You will just need lots of enthusiasm, a moderate fitness level, a good eye for detail and persistence required to survey for at least five hours per day walking through sometimes challenging terrain.

Accommodation and breakfast will be provided at Falls Creek Alpine Resort. Transport will be provided to and from the survey areas each day. Volunteers need to make their own way to Falls Creek the night before session start date.

Participating in volunteer surveys is a great way to help protect the Victorian Alps from this dangerous weed, as well as a fantastic opportunity to enjoy the magnificent alpine environment during the green summer months.

If you are interested in helping to eradicate this alpine invader and would like to know more, email hawkweed@parks.vic.gov.au or call 13 1963.
