Marine

Victoria’s marine environments are amongst the most diverse and spectacular in the world. Marine areas have been the last type of ecosystem to become protected in Victoria. Marine national parks and sanctuaries were established in 2002 and protect an example of each of the major type of marine ecosystem in Victoria.
A useful way to distinguish and manage the marine ecosystem is by marine habitats and the animals and plants typical of these areas. A marine habitat is a place where species are found together.
