Toolern Creek Park plan
Planning for the Toolern Creek Park has progressed to the development of a Strategic Management Plan. This follows on from the Strategic Directions Statement and the recently completed Master Plan.
The Strategic Management Plan will be developed in consultation with key stakeholders and relevant government agencies. A Draft Strategic Management Plan will be released for public comment in the near future.
Toolern Creek Park is located three kilometres south of Melton Township. The 130 hectares park will provide a place for recreation, relaxation and conservation. Visitors will enjoy the beauty of the River Red Gum corridor along Toolern Creek and may be lucky enough to spy a platypus, which are known inhabitants of the area. The higher parts of the site support stands of Grey Box and provide views to Mount Cottrell and the Brisbane Ranges.
The Park will run along the east side of Toolern Creek from Bridge Road, Melton South, to Griegs Road, near where Toolern Creek meets the Werribee River adjacent to Melton Reservoir. The planned Toolern community is expected to bring 60,000 new residents into the area over the coming two decades. As well as providing for nature-based recreation, the park will include sports grounds for the new community, as notionally identified in the park Master Plan.
Stage 1 development will consist of park fencing, a shared concrete trail, secondary gravel walking paths and minor visitor facilities. The full park will develop over a period of 15 – 20 years as funding becomes available.
Throughout 2009 works were undertaken to extend the existing Toolern Creek Trail from Blamey Drive in Melton South, across Toolern Creek to lead into the new park. The walking and cycling trail along the creek will eventually lead from Melton Township to the Werribee River.
