Fishing

Cast a line in quiet lakes and gently flowing rivers, the pounding surf or in the depths of the bays from your boat.

Bays, lakes and rivers
One of Melbourne's greatest natural attractions known for its sheltered waters, long coastline, and sandy beaches Port Phillip offers many popular angling locations including piers at Middle Park, Mordialloc, Mornington, Rye, Sorrento, Geelong, Altona or Williamstown. Lake fishing from a boat, bank or jetty is popular throughout Gippsland Lakes Coastal Park. The extensive lakes system is a haven for water birds as well as fish including tailor, bream, luderick, Australian salmon, mullet and silver trevally.

Beaches and coasts
A little further east along the ocean coastline from Portsea to Cape Schanck, Mornington Peninsula National Park features outstanding natural scenery and is popular with shore based anglers. Popular fishing spots include London Bridge and Gunnamatta, where easy access is provided to the sandy beaches. Surf fishing along the Ninety Mile Beach or in the wilderness coast of East Gippsland, the remote beaches of Croajingolong National Park are an anglers dream. Offshore fishing at Mallacoota is among the best in Victoria, and remote fishing in the Tamboon Inlet is an excellent alternative for those wanting to fish in medium sized boats or "tinnies".

Mountains and peaks
Major streams and rivers of the spectacular Alpine National Park provide great fishing opportunities in some of Australia's most stunning mountain landscapes. Catch brown trout in the King and Rose Rivers and at Lake William Hovell, or fish for brown trout and black fish, bass and eels in the Dargo River during the cooler months. Grampians National Park with its rugged sandstone ranges, clad with forests and rich in wildlife, provides an ideal setting for anglers. Lake Wartook is considered to be one of the more attractive of waters in the region and is well regarded for trout fishing by bait and fly-fishers.
