Recent completion of road works opens new range of visitor experiences
Parks Victoria is excited to announce there are now more ways to explore historic Fort Nepean with the conclusion of extensive road works to Defence Road on Mornington Peninsula.
The Point Nepean Master Plan aims to increase connectivity and accessibility to this iconic area. Parks Victoria has redeveloped Defence Road, upgrading the surface and condition and introducing a range of safety measures to improve the visitor experience.
Following expert advice, these works will allow cyclists to be able to ride beyond Fort Pearce to Fort Nepean via The Narrows – thin stretch of land flanked by the Bass Strait and Port Phillip Bay with a route previously unsuitable for cycling. The road work upgrades allow for a safer and more accessible experience for all, with a number of cycling options now available to complement existing pedestrian and shuttle bus routes.
Previously cycling was prohibited beyond Fort Pearce but the new road surface and safety features mean visitors will now be able to ride bikes along the picturesque Narrows right up to the staircase below Fort Nepean. E-bikes can also be hired from the Port Nepean Information Centre in the Quarantine Station. Racks will be available to store bikes at Fort Nepean’s entrance.
While Parks Victoria encourages people to cycle to Fort Nepean and experience a relaxing and stunning environment, we remind cyclists that the road is a shared zone with a 30km/h limit and pedestrians have priority. We also urge cyclists to ride responsibly as despite the significant improvements, the area is still subject to strong crosswinds, narrow sections and sand drift. Authorised vehicles and shuttle busses do utilise the route too.
