Parks Victoria secures top billing in the Banksia Awards

Thursday 2 November, 2017

Parks Victoria is a finalist in the 2017 Banksia Indigenous Leadership for Sustainability Award with an innovative program including a state of the art mobile app.

“What an honour to be considered for the Banksia Sustainability Award. It’s a privilege to get this acknowledgement and be recognised for our Managing Country Together (MC2G) program in partnership with Traditional Owners, which is fundamental in our organisation,” Matthew Jackson, CEO, Parks Victoria.

The Award recognises demonstrated leadership and innovation in the care of land and waterways, capacity building of the local community and enhancing long term growth.

This year’s Parks Victoria program competed against two other entries from the Winya Indigenous Furniture Pty Ltd and the Water Corporation.

MC2G is an innovative tool for staff to support strategic partnerships with Traditional Owners in the management of Country, allowing Parks Victoria rangers to manage Country and significant cultural landscapes in ‘real’ time.

The initiative puts the tools needed to manage Country on rangers’ mobile phones, including heritage assessment forms, Aboriginal cultural heritage engagement tools, relevant contacts and current definitions.

Over three years in the making, the MC2G app is being progressively implemented in 2017. It incorporates traditional ecological knowledge and different land management philosophies, to identify partnership opportunities, manage legislative compliance and support greater accountability and capability as park managers.

The only program of its kind in Australia, MC2G has the potential to deliver results for Parks Victoria and Traditional Owners across 17% (4 million hectares) of Victoria’s cultural landscapes. It also provides a lasting model for land managers built on authentic relationships, strong engagement, sound principles and real commitment.

Quotes attributable to Parks Victoria CEO Matthew Jackson:

“The Award recognises this initiative, which I believe should become the benchmark for all States, Territories and Agencies.”

Quotes attributable to Parks Victoria Executive Director Planning and Partnerships David Major: “Parks Victoria is honoured to be a finalist in this Award and manage landscapes in partnership with Traditional Owners and be working together for an exciting and meaningful shared future.”
