Bilingual tour guides program

Bilingual guides provide tours of parks to newly arrived migrants and refugees around Melbourne.
Volunteer bilingual guides have been trained to lead park tours in languages other than English and to educate culturally and linguistically diverse communities about Victoria’s marine and land parks, plants and animals.
The guides aim to break down barriers to access and show that parks are safe, fun and free for all people.
Languages spoken by guides include: Arabic, Assyrian, Chinese, Chilean, French, Greek, Hararian (Ethiopia), Hindi, Karen, South Korean, Spanish, Sudanese, Syrian, and Turkish.
If you are interested in contacting a bilingual guide, please contact the Community Participation unit on 131963.
The Bilingual Guide program is a collaborative program, and was established in 2007 in partnership with the City of Whittlesea, Merri Creek Management Committee, and the Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE (NMIT), and funded by the Office of Women’s Policy and the Commonwealth Government’s Caring for Country program. The 2010 program was funded by the State Government’s Go For Your Life initiative.
The current program is a partnership with Fisheries Victoria’s Marine and Freshwater Discovery Program and funded by the Department of Planning and Community Development’s Volunteer Portal grants.
