Buchan Munji (Buchan Caves Reserve) will re-open for the Easter holidays after joint managers Parks Victoria and Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation oversaw a major program of recovery works. 

The reserve has been closed for safety reasons since Boxing Day, when more than 60 millimetres of rain fell in 30 minutes, causing major damage. 

Buildings and bridges were inundated, with large volumes of debris and silt spread throughout the reserve. The road network was severely damaged, with 700 metres of asphalt surface stripped away by floodwaters. During the initial clean-up phase more than 250 tonnes of debris was cleared.

Thanks to a united recovery effort that included Parks Victoria, Gunaikurnai Rangers, East Gippsland Catchment Management Authority, East Gippsland Water, Forest Fire Management Victoria and countless private contractors, the reserve is ready to safely welcome visitors once again.

The reserve will open from Tuesday 26 March, with cave tours, the campground and Caves House taking bookings for the Easter holidays. The pool, visitor centre and most trails and visitor areas will also open. 

While a temporary closure will be required after the holiday period to permanently repair the road network, the Easter re-opening is a boost for local residents and businesses. 

Located in East Gippsland, Buchan Munji (Buchan Caves Reserve) is much-loved by its local community and a vital contributor to the local economy. It’s a popular place for tourists, many who come to see Victoria’s largest cave system. This honeycomb of spectacular limestone formations was carved by an underground river almost 400 million years ago.
