Badger Weir Picnic Area reopening a step closer

Wednesday 3 October, 2018

This month Parks Victoria will commence $1.2 million of repair work at Badger Weir Picnic Area following the appointment of contractor, Harris HMC.

The site’s repair and upgrade is expected to take approximately five months. Works are scheduled to commence in October 2018, with an expected completion date of March 2019.

The work will include reconstruction and repairs to:

  • Picnic tables
  • Rebuilt barbecues
  • Park benches
  • A new toilet block
  • Drinking fountains
  • Fences and gates
  • Roads and bridges

The picnic area was closed for public safety following a powerful storm that brought down hundreds of trees and damaged site facilities.

Badger Weir Picnic Area is part of the Yarra Ranges National Park, boasting forests of tall Mountain Ash and tree ferns that are home to many native animals such as possums, bats, owls, parrots and Crimson Rosellas. There are many short walks nearby through lush rainforest and picnic areas where visitors can hold family gatherings in a superb natural environment.

The reopening of the site has been delayed after the first tender process run by Parks Victoria received no tender submissions. A second tender process run recently successfully identified and appointed a contractor.

In the meantime, Badger Weir Picnic Ground will remain closed to visitors to allow works to be undertaken promptly and safely.

Quote attributable to Simon Talbot, Chief Operating Officer, Parks Victoria

“Parks Victoria is committed to the wellbeing of our visitors and providing safe and clean parks and waterways for them to enjoy.

We understand the community’s frustration as the picnic area has been closed longer than expected and we apologise for the disruption this has caused. The good news is that work will begin soon and we look forward to welcoming the Victorian community back to Badger Weir next year.”
