Mountain peaks

Experience some of Australia’s most stunning mountain peaks, alpine landscapes, escarpments and grassy high plains. During winter, the snow-capped climbs of Alpine National Park offer a playground for experienced skiers and nearby Mount Buffalo allows for tobogganing and snow play suitable for the whole family. For cross-country skiers the Bogong High Plains, JB Plain and the Mt Loch area or Cresta Valley has three groomed ski trails plus a large untracked/unmarked area for the more adventurous and well prepared. Mount St Gwinear in Baw Baw National Park, easily accessible from Melbourne, is a family-friendly snow attraction offering toboggan runs, snowshoeing, cross country trails and a snow play area.

In the warmer months, the crisp alpine climate of the high country provides endless opportunities for hiking, cycling, four-wheel driving and camping. Victoria’s largest national park, Alpine National Park is also home to its highest peaks Mount Bogong and Mount Feathertop. From hikes to plunging waterfalls, the network of tracks among the Snow Gums, summer wildflowers and historic mountain huts of the Bogong High Plains make being in nature all the more rewarding. Take in superb 360-degree views from the summit of the Horn and the delightful Gorge Heritage Walk at Mount Buffalo or stay a little longer and pitch a tent at the spectacularly picturesque Lake Catani campground.

Rising abruptly from the surrounding Western Plains, the Grampians National Park (Gariwerd) houses a series of rugged sandstone mountain ranges and forests rich in wildlife. One of Victoria’s most iconic nature destinations, the Grampians is a year-round outdoor haven for camping, rock climbing, scenic drives, bushwalks and wildlife. The Grampians Peaks Trail, a network of walking tracks throughout the park, allows you to explore cascading waterfalls, brilliant spring wildflower displays, and panoramic views from lookouts. Drive to Reeds lookout for the perfect sunset or Boroka lookout for more spectacular views or visit the magnificent Fish Falls.
