Historic area open as part of Greater Shepparton Heritage Open Days
Parks Victoria invites the community to visit Days Mill Historic Area 10am to 4pm on Friday 22 and Saturday 23 March to explore the remarkable 19th century flour mill and see its restoration work in progress.
Visitors are invited to stroll the grounds of the historic area and wander through the historic buildings. Guided tours will run at 11am, 12pm and 2.15pm on both Friday and Saturday, for visitors to hear first-hand about the Mill, House and Gatehouse at the Heritage Registered site.
Days Mill is just one of more than fifty places of heritage and history being opened up to the public as part of the Greater Shepparton’s Heritage Open Days. No bookings are required for Days Mill but visitors are urged to wear suitable clothing, footwear and sun protection and bring a water bottle.
Greater Shepparton’s Heritage Open Days provides an opportunity to visit places that are rarely open to members of the public, with free bus trips, walks, talks, tours and visits available on both days. Further information about the event is available on the Council website www.greatershepparton.com.au as well as in hard copy in the Council foyer, local libraries and Visitor Centre.
Days Mill is one of the finest examples of traditional milling technology in working order in its original setting in Victoria, and probably Australia. The three-storey brick mill of 1865 and later granary extension, the flanking two-storey brick residence, the evocative collection of farm buildings, and the peppercorn- and pine tree-lined drive from the gatehouse comprise an unforgettable heritage site.
Parks Victoria manages more than 3,000 historic heritage places and objects across the state. This diverse collection is significant in representing key aspects of Victoria’s history.
Quotes attributable to Parks Victoria Range Team Leader Shepparton Neville Wells:
“Days Mill has a very high profile locally and across the district the community is interested to see and hear about the recent restorations.”
“Parks Victoria plays a stewardship role of managing Days Mill on behalf of the community and we’re looking forward to opening it up to visitors.”
“The Open Days are a perfect opportunity for people to see the restoration work we’re undertaking. In particular, the Gatehouse has been transformed. Those who have visited before might not recognise it and are sure to be impressed.”
