Restoring the heritage of the alpine huts

Gooleys Hut undergoes restoration works

Parks Victoria in conjunction with the Victorian High-Country Huts Association (VHCHA) and the East Malvern Motorcycle Club are delighted to announce the restoration of Gooleys Hut in the Alpine National Park.

During a weekend long working bee in November, the team of volunteers worked tirelessly undertaking a range of tasks with the principles of heritage protection at the forefront.

The Gooleys Hut restoration works were extensive including removing the existing chimney and completely dismantling the hut prior to rebuilding it from the ground up.  New base logs were installed, drainage improved, a new chimney constructed with a new fireplace and barriers installed to protect the hut.  All in all, it was a mammoth reconstruction job.

Quotes attributable to Parks Victoria Area Chief Ranger, Western Alps Bart Smith

“Parks Victoria and the VHCHA have worked in partnership on a number of projects over the past decade and we were keen to come together again to rebuild the Gooleys Hut.

“A great deal of planning was carried out between the groups to ensure the unique heritage of Gooleys Hut was maintained”.

Quotes attributable to Victorian High-Country Huts Association President Allen Skilton

“This project could not have happened if not for the great work and cooperation of many people associated with the Victorian High-Country Huts Association, the staff of Parks Victoria and members of the East Malvern Motorcycle Club”.

Quotes attributable to East Malvern Motorcycle Club Drew Caughey

“The East Malvern Motorcycle Club were involved in the rebuild of Gooleys Hut in 2003 and we were delighted to be involved again in restoring the hut for future use”.
