International Marine Protected Area Congress

Every four years, the International Marine Protected Areas Congress (IMPAC) brings together major maritime stakeholders from around the globe, beyond national or sectoral boundaries, to assist in the conservation and sustainable development of the oceans.

Participants represent public management and planning agencies, research institutions, non-governmental organizations, coastal or island communities, and sea-related industries, from fishing to cable laying, mining, shipping and tourism.

The first International Marine Protected Area Congress (IMPAC1) was staged in Geelong, Victoria, Australia from 23-28 October 2005.

The Congress was organised through a committee comprising representatives of Parks Victoria, Great Barrier Reef Marine Parks Authority (as co-chairs), World Commission on Protected Areas, Australian Department of Environment & Heritage and the Australian Fisheries Management Authority. IUCN was a major supporter.

There were 666 registered full-time participants together with a further 65 day registrants plus 62 exhibitors. The delegates came from 78 countries. See below for the full proceedings of this event.

IMPAC2 was part of the International Marine Conservation Congress (IMCC) - organised by the Marine Section of the Society for Conservation Biology at George Mason University in Washington DC USA from 20-24 May 2009.

In 2013, the Agence des aires marines protégées (French Marine Protected Areas Agency) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) will co-host the 3rd edition of the International Marine Protected Areas Congress (IMPAC3). The core of the Congress will take place in Marseille from 21-25 October. It will be followed by a high-level political meeting in Corsica 26 and 27 October (invitation only).
