Mount Skene Natural Features Scenic Reserve is located on Taungurung Country amongst tall stands of Alpine Ash, Snowgum woodlands and sub-alpine heathlands. The Reserve is a hidden gem, boasting scenic views of the stunning peaks of the surrounding Victorian Alps. Standing tall at 1570m above sea level Mount Skene Natural Features Scenic Reserve typically experiences regular snowfall between June and October, however it is not unsual for it to occur at anytime. Mount Skene is a breathtaking sight throughout winter, meander through snow blanketed heathlands or admire snowgums laden with snow and ice.

The Reserve provides the opportunity for a range of recreational activities, including hunting, bushwalking, four wheel driving and basic camping. Enjoy a picnic at one of Mount Skene Natural Features Scenic Reserve’s secluded day visitor areas, or simply take a drive across the top, admiring breathtaking views.

Please ensure you take all your rubbish home as there are no bins nor toilets located within the Reserve. Be aware, visitors are unable to access Mount Skene Natural Features Scenic Reserve by vehicle from the Thursday after Kings birthday weekend to the Thursday before Melbourne Cup Day unless carrying a permit. Mount Skene scenic viewpoint

Enjoy a scenic drive to Mount Skene Scenic View Point day visitor area. Have a picnic nestled amongst snowgums, taking in spectacular views of the Victorian High Country. There are no bins within the Reserve so please ensure you take all rubbish with you when you leave.

Mount Skene summit walk

Take a short walk with the whole family to the summit of Mount Skene. Sitting at 1570m above sea level, delight in breathtaking views all year round or explore the colourful sub-alpine grasslands and heathlands in wildflower season.

Rumpff Saddle

Spend a peaceful night sitting by the fire surrounded by Alpine Ash forests at Rumpff Saddle Campground located on the southern end of the Reserve. Be aware of tree limbs falling, even on still days. Ensure you camp in clear areas away from trees.

Wildlife

Mount Skene Natural Features Scenic Reseve has a fascinating array of wildlife, including the Australian Ground Thrush, Southern Yellow Robin, Eastern Spinebill, Lewin honeyeater, Common wombat, Antechinus, and Bush Rat.

How to get there

Mount Skene Natural Features and Scenic Reserve

Mount Skene Natural Features Scenic Reserve is located just 135kms northeast of Melbourne CBD (approx. 4 hours’ drive). The drive will take you through the Dandenong’s to Moe, and finally Licola, before taking the Jamison-Licola Road (unsealed road) into Mount Skene Natural Features Scenic Reserve.

Be prepared as it can be rocky and slippery in places so drive to the conditions. Call the local Parks Victoria office or check the website to gain an understanding of track conditions prior to undertaking your trip.

When to go

Enjoy a picnic at one of Mount Skene Natural Features Scenic Reserve’s many breathtaking viewpoints but please exercise caution during hot, dry periods of high fire danger. Ensure you check the weather before you plan a trip.
