Delivering pier and jetty upgrades

We know Victorians love our piers and jetties and the opportunities they offer to enjoy time in the great outdoors in exciting and inspiring coastal locations. Melbourne’s iconic piers and jetties are important focal points for communities and businesses and receive more than 30 million visits annually. They contribute to economic growth and employment, benefiting communities through social wellbeing, tourism, marine activities, and related industries.

Many of these structures were renewed around 50 years ago and are reaching the end of their design life, requiring significant investment to keep them safe for the community.

We know the community want more accessible and safer piers and jetties so they can continue enjoying recreational activities like fishing, boating, diving or just strolling and taking in the sea air.

Priority investment is being directed where it is needed most and ready to be delivered, with Parks Victoria overseeing more than $70 million of vital repairs, upgrades and redevelopments to make our piers and jetties better for the future.

Completed projects

Through the Victorian Government's $24 million Piers and Jetties economic stimulus package, works recently completed include:

the renovation of Middle Brighton Pier,
construction of a new Tooradin Jetty
a new pier head, low-landing pontoon and rock groyne at Portarlington Pier
Portarlington Pier upgrades including a new covered walkway with Wadawurrung Sea Country art
restoration of the historic Lifeboat Shed at Queenscliff South Pier
Cowes Jetty upgrades to support improved recreational boating facilities
Rye Pier approach reconstruction

Through the Victorian Government's Better Recreational Facilities package, completed projects include:

Repairs to Frankston Pier
Seaford Pier upgrades
Rye Pier's new lower landing
Pile replacement at Gem Pier

Projects underway

A number of other stimulus funded major projects are either underway or scheduled between 2022–2024, including:

A brand new Altona Pier
Rye Pier outer pier and pier head reconstruction

St Kilda Pier’s exciting 53 million redevelopment
Flinders Pier Safety Works project

Future planning and improvements

Beyond these projects Parks Victoria is committed to ensuring a long-term strategy for the future management of our piers and jetties. Regular engagement with stakeholders and communities is helping to better understand aspirations and priorities for the future. Community information is used to help inform the Victorian Government of the repair and renewal requirements and priorities of the large portfolio of maritime assets to deliver a safe and sustainable local ports network for everyone to enjoy.

Through the support of the newly developed Sustainable Local Ports Framework, Parks Victoria will work closely with other agencies, stakeholders and community to prioritise future investment where it’s needed most. This investment and decision-making pathway will go a long way to building a sustainable network that everyone can continue to enjoy for many years to come.
