The project
This project is being delivered on the Country of the Eastern Maar people.
Erskine Falls near Lorne is particularly popular among the waterfalls of the Great Otway National Park, plunging - or trickling, depending on recent rainfall - down a 30-metre drop.
The carpark and track to the falls are being upgraded, with new fencing and handrails. Stairs will be replaced on the existing access path to the base of the falls. A new lookout platform at the base of falls will allow people to safely enjoy this spectacular fern gully and views of the waterfall, while protecting the sensitive vegetation. Two bridges along Lemonade Creek will also be repaired.

The upgrades will make it safer and easier for a wide range of people to enjoy the walking track and views to the waterfall.

Improved track surface and a new lookout at the base of the falls will help people to stay on the track and protect sensitive vegetation.
Project funding
This project has been funded $720,400 from Victoria’s Great Outdoors.
Victoria’s Great Outdoors is $106.6 million investment by the Victorian Government into better campgrounds, walking trails, 4WD tracks and visitor facilities across Victoria’s parks and state forests.
Environment and cultural heritage management
The Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action has granted key environmental permits and approvals. Cultural heritage on site has been assessed to ensure it is protected throughout the delivery of works.

While nature will always be unpredictable, our projects and maintenance works help minimise risks and help people explore the great outdoors safely.
Parks Victoria is responsible for continuously managing and maintaining over 50,000 pieces of infrastructure across the state annually.
We’re also delivering new projects to help visitors get into nature. These are thoroughly planned and prepared to keep people and projects separate – and safe. When visiting a park where projects are happening, especially during construction, it’s important that people follow the direction of signs, stay out of fenced and restricted areas, and listen to Parks Victoria staff and work crews.

Access changes
The walking track to the base of Erskine Falls will be temporarily closed while work is underway. Visitors will be able to continue to enjoy views down over the falls from the top lookout, however short-term closures may be required during construction to allow movement of machinery and structures down the steps to the work site. Check Great Otway National Park page to stay up to date with temporary closures expected during 2024.
