The project
This project is being delivered at Wilsons Promontory National Park. The park is part of a cultural landscape, and Parks Victoria respects the deep and continuing connection that Traditional Owners have to these lands and waters, and we recognise their ongoing role in caring for the country.
The Promontory’s Lightstation is situated at the southernmost tip of Australia’s mainland, surrounded by rugged coastline and the rough seas of the Bass Strait.
Built in 1859 from local granite, the Lightstation and its cottages were once home to lightkeepers and their families – who had the important job of guiding ships safely through the passage of the Strait. Life at the Lightstation was a solitary one, the only contact with the outside world coming from the signals of passing ships, or when supply ship – the Lady Loch – brought deliveries to the remote isthmus just twice a year.
While the Lightstation remains remote and is only accessible on foot, it’s now visited by thousands every year. Hikers climb through eucalypt forests and sandy, coastal tee-tree scrub, and traverse the granite-strewn landscape to experience this historical place and take in its magnificent views.
The project will undertake important conservation repairs to structural and rot problems on the external envelope and internal issues in the heritage listed Lightstation buildings. The Lightkeepers’ Cottages will also be evaluated for future maintenance works.
Works will contribute to the conservation of the Wilsons Promontory Lightstation, ensuring both local and international visitors can continue to experience this unique piece of Australia’s maritime history.

Visitors and community
Through conservation works to the Light station and areas of the lightkeepers’ cottage, this investment provides the community with renewed opportunities to visit and engage with the local history of Wilsons Promontory.
From enjoying the spectacular views of the tower, to staying a night in the granite cottages – these works will help ensure the Lighthouse remains open and safe for future generations to enjoy.
Economy
The Heritage Icons projects are expected to create around 80 jobs over four years, many in specialist trades. Works will also support Victoria’s tourism industry by preserving and protecting this historical site for visitors at home and right across the world.
Project funding
The Victorian Government is investing $0.8 million for repair and conservation works to the Wilsons Promontory Light station.
Environmental and cultural management
Parks Victoria will undertake relevant assessments during this project to identify and protect environmental and cultural values. Necessary permits and approvals will be sought before any works commence.

Access changes
There are currently no access changes to the Light Station. Parks Victoria will provide ample notice of any impacts to the public prior to construction commencing on site.
