Junior Rangers Alpine Activity Book
Alpine habitats are home to towering rocky peaks, lush valleys and high plains called plateaus. These mountains, also called the Alps, are found through eastern Victoria, from the border of New South Wales down to Central Gippsland.
The climate, landscape and plants of the Alps change the higher up the mountains you go. Alpine environments are known for their changeable weather. At high altitudes, snow falls and settles on the cold mountain peaks for many months. The plants and animals that live in these harsh conditions rely on their superpowers to survive.

Victoria's marine and coastal habitats form a part of the Great Southern Reef. This is a patchy rocky reef, rich in biodiversity, that extends all the way from Southern Queensland to Western Australia. Most of the species that live on the Great Southern Reef are found nowhere else in the world.
Marine habitats include all underwater areas below the high tide mark and the ocean surface. Coastal habitats include the sandy and rocky areas where the land meets the ocean.

These features of dry forests create homes, called habitats, for many types of animals to live. The dry forests are found in areas with less rainfall than other wetter parts of Victoria. The plants and animals that live in dry forests are adapted to survive in dry conditions.

Grasslands are areas where the main plants are native grasses and herbs with few trees. Grassy woodlands have some taller trees with large open grassy areas. Native grasslands used to be common in Victoria, but when Europeans arrived, they were quickly replaced by farms, roads and towns. Only 1% of Victoria’s original grasslands remain, mainly in the Murray River floodplain and volcanic plains of south west Victoria.
Grasslands hide their secrets well. Look closely and you’ll find an amazing diversity of plants and animals.

Today, Victoria still has magical pockets of lush, green rainforests found at the bottom of deep gullies, surrounded by wet forests. To get to a rainforest, you might travel through a wet forest of towering Mountain Ash trees. The dense canopy of dark green leaves keeps the air cool and damp. It also filters sunlight, creating the perfect environment for tree-ferns, mosses, vines and fungi. Wet forests and rainforests are full of life, so remember to look up, down and all around for shy creatures hiding amongst the dense habitat.
